Why isn't my website showing up on Google?
Few things are more unsettling than searching for your own website and finding nothing. Usually it's not a disaster — it's one of a handful of common, fixable causes, from a brand-new site Google hasn't indexed yet to an accidental "hide from search" setting. Here's how to work out why, and what to do about it.
First, check if you're indexed at all
Search Google for site:yourdomain.com (your address after "site:"). If pages show up, you're indexed and the issue is ranking, not visibility. If nothing shows, Google hasn't indexed your site — and the reasons for that are usually simple to fix.
If you're a new site
A brand-new website simply takes time — Google has to discover, crawl and index it, which can take days to weeks. You can speed it up by setting up Google Search Console and submitting your sitemap, which tells Google your pages exist. New-site patience is the most common "problem" of all, and it isn't really a problem.
If Google is being blocked
- The "discourage search engines" setting is still on from when the site was built — a very common cause.
- A robots.txt file or meta tag is accidentally telling Google not to index pages.
- The pages aren't linked to from anywhere, so Google can't find them.
- The site is so slow or broken that crawling fails.
If you were there and dropped out
If your site used to appear and vanished, look for: a recent redesign that changed URLs without redirects, a Google algorithm update, a technical problem blocking crawling, or — rarely — a penalty for spammy tactics. Google Search Console will usually flag the cause. Sudden drops after a site change almost always trace back to that change.
How to get found
- Set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.
- Make sure search visibility is switched on and nothing is blocking crawling.
- Ensure every important page is linked and reachable.
- Give it useful content and time — indexing and ranking both take a while.
Common questions
Why isn't my website showing up on Google?
Common reasons are: the site is new and not yet indexed, a "discourage search engines" setting or robots rule is blocking Google, pages aren't linked so Google can't find them, or (if you dropped out) a redesign changed URLs without redirects. Searching site:yourdomain.com shows whether you're indexed at all.
How long does it take for a new website to appear on Google?
Anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, as Google discovers, crawls and indexes it. Setting up Google Search Console and submitting your sitemap speeds up discovery. If nothing has appeared after a few weeks, check that search visibility is switched on and nothing is blocking Google.
How do I get Google to index my website?
Set up Google Search Console, submit your XML sitemap, and make sure every important page is linked and not blocked by a robots rule or "discourage search engines" setting. Then give it time — indexing isn't instant. Search Console will also tell you which pages are indexed and flag any problems.
My website disappeared from Google — what happened?
If it was there and vanished, the usual causes are a redesign that changed URLs without redirects, a technical issue blocking crawling, a Google algorithm update, or a penalty for manipulative tactics. Google Search Console usually shows the cause. Sudden drops right after a site change almost always trace to that change.
